North Coogee Dog Beach is home to Western Australia's first engineered fringing reef, built as both an innovative erosion-control solution and a dedicated snorkelling hotspot. The 3.5-tonne artificial reef sits just 50–75 metres offshore, creating a calm, beginner-friendly snorkel zone teeming with macroalgae, seaweed, and mussels that have rapidly colonised the structures. Underwater surveys have recorded double the marine life since installation, making this a must-visit for anyone wanting to see a thriving artificial ecosystem in Perth's crystal-clear coastal waters.

Low risk: Boat traffic
The reef is close to shore but swimmers should be mindful of boat traffic in the area, particularly on weekends.
Low risk: Winter swell and cool water
During winter months, cold water and stronger swells can make snorkelling less comfortable and reduce visibility.
