Lying 30 km south of Sale in Victoria's Gippsland region, Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park protects a spectacular stretch of coastline where the Southern Ocean meets one of Australia's longest uninterrupted beaches. Beneath the surface, vast sandy plains and low-profile rocky reefs host unique temperate marine life, including colourful sponges, sea whips, and the venomous Common Stargazer. The park's shallow nearshore waters, varying currents, and shifting sandbars create a dynamic underwater environment that rewards experienced snorkelers willing to explore its secluded, wave-pounded shoreline.

Moderate risk: Strong currents and undertows
Powerful ocean currents and rip undertows are common along the open beach, particularly during swell periods and king tides.
Moderate risk: Longshore currents
Strong lateral currents running parallel to the beach can sweep snorkellers away from their entry point.
Low risk: Shifting sandbars
Dynamic nearshore sandbars shift frequently, creating sudden depth changes and submerged obstacles.
Low risk: Common Stargazer
The venomous Common Stargazer buries itself in the sandy seabed near reefs. Stepping on one can deliver a painful electric shock.
