Nine Mile Reef lies roughly 14 km offshore from Tweed Heads, straddling the NSW–Queensland border. This isolated submerged reef features a dramatic rocky ridge, ledges, gutters, and bommies that drop from 12 m to 30 m. It's legendary among local divers and advanced snorkelers for its formidable grey nurse shark aggregations — over 100 have been counted in the "shark pit" gutter during winter. The reef is blanketed in black coral trees, gorgonians, soft and hard corals, sponges and ascidians, supporting a rich subtropical ecosystem. Strong currents and exposed oceanic conditions mean this is strictly for experienced watergoers.

High risk: Strong Ocean Currents
Tidal currents can rip at up to 3 knots (approx. 5.5 km/h), making navigation and return to the boat extremely challenging.
Moderate risk: Exposed Offshore Conditions
Located 9 nautical miles offshore, the site is fully exposed to ocean swell and weather. Trips are frequently cancelled unless conditions are exceptionally calm.
Moderate risk: Depth and Drop-offs
The reef top sits around 10–12 m deep and drops to 30 m, with sudden depth changes that can disorient snorkelers.
Low risk: Shark Encounters
The reef is a famous shark aggregation site. Grey nurse sharks are common in winter (over 100 recorded); wobbegongs, leopard sharks, and occasional bronze whalers are present year-round.
Low risk: Barnacle-Infested Reef
The reef surface is covered in sharp barnacles that can cause cuts and abrasions to exposed skin.
