Tucked along Esperance's Great Ocean Drive, the Nine Mile Beach rock pools are a series of natural granite lagoons formed by shore-parallel beachrock reefs. At the right tide, these sheltered pools become calm, shallow snorkelling havens — perfect for families and beginners to explore. The crystalline water reveals small fish darting among the rocky crevices, while the surrounding calcarenite formations create a dramatic coastal backdrop. Sharp rocks are common, so reef shoes are a must. Accessed via a staircase from the cliff-top car park, this spot offers a rewarding blend of easy snorkelling and wild coastal scenery.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Wave overtopping and currents

Waves may wash over the outer reefs during higher swell or on incoming tides, creating strong currents that can make the pools unsafe.

  • Moderate risk: Stair access damage/closure

Stair access to the beach has been subject to damage and closure due to erosion. Check local council reports before visiting.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocks

Sharp granite and beachrock reef edges are common throughout the pools. Sturdy reef shoes or 'thongs' are essential to avoid cuts.
