The Nambucca River at Macksville offers a serene tidal estuary snorkeling experience on the NSW North Coast. Sheltered by lush riverbanks and dotted with oyster leases, the river's calm, tannin-stained waters are perfect for floating above sandy bottoms and seagrass beds. The mix of fresh and saltwater creates a rich nursery habitat, with popular entry points near the Macksville Aquatic Centre or the Nambucca River Tourist Park. It's a peaceful alternative to ocean snorkeling — expect gentle currents and excellent visibility on the incoming tide.

Moderate risk: Oyster Lease Structures
Oyster-covered stakes, poles, and lease structures are submerged in parts of the river. Sharp barnacles and shells can cause cuts.
Moderate risk: Boat Traffic
Boat traffic including fishing vessels and waterskiers use the broad stretches of the river. Snorkelers should stay near shore and be vigilant.
Low risk: Tidal Current
The river is tidal. Incoming and outgoing tides can create significant currents, especially near the river bends and around oyster lease structures.
Low risk: Stingrays in Shallows
Stingrays and other bottom-dwelling species may be hidden in sandy or silty shallows. Shuffle feet when wading to avoid surprise encounters.
