Murray Bay (also known as Murrays Bay) is a secluded, palm-fringed beach on the outskirts of Bowen, Queensland, offering one of the most accessible shore-based snorkeling experiences on the central Great Barrier Reef. A fringing coral reef lies just a short swim from the sandy shore, where shallow waters (around 6m deep) host colourful hard corals, plate corals, and rocky overhangs teeming with marine life. The bay is part of the scenic Cape Edgecumbe headland walk, and its calm, protected waters make it a favourite for snorkelers wanting to explore vibrant coral gardens without needing a boat. The best snorkeling conditions are at high tide when the coral formations are easily reached from shore.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Tide-dependent visibility

Best snorkelling at low tide when corals are close to the surface. At higher tides, the reef is deeper and less visible.

  • Low risk: Rocky shoreline entry

Rocky areas along the edges of the bay require care when entering and exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Shallow Coral at Low Tide

Visibility is best at high tide; low tide can make coral very shallow and increase risk of contact with sharp coral.

  • Low risk: Territorial Damselfish

Damselfish can be territorial and may peck or prod snorkelers swimming near their coral homes.

  • Low risk: Variable Visibility

Visibility is variable (2-8m) and can drop significantly after periods of high wind and heavy seas.

  • Low risk: Shallow Gradient

Shallow coastal gradient makes depths beyond 6m hard to find; swimmers may need to cover more distance to reach deeper areas.
