Murray Bay is a secluded tropical beach on the Cape Edgecumbe headland near Bowen, offering one of the best shore-based snorkelling experiences along the Whitsundays mainland. Its fringing reef sits just metres from the sand, providing easy access to coral gardens and impressive offshore island views. Sheltered within a calm bay, the water is often clear and calm, making it ideal for spotting colourful reef fish. The beach is framed by coconut palms and granite boulders, with excellent whale-watching opportunities during the winter months. Accessed only by a narrow walking track, it remains a quiet, family-friendly spot perfect for a peaceful day by the water.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)

Stinger season along the Queensland coast brings jellyfish (including box jellyfish) into shallow waters from October to May.

  • Low risk: Low-tide shallow reef

The best snorkelling is at low tide when corals are close to the surface, but this also means shallower water requiring care to avoid standing on or damaging coral.

  • Low risk: Steep access track

Steep access track from the car park down to the beach may be slippery, especially after rain.

  • Low risk: Remote beach — no lifeguards

Limited facilities and no lifeguards on this secluded beach. Snorkellers should exercise personal responsibility.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral at low tide

Low tide reveals shallow coral heads that can cause scrapes or cuts. Wear reef shoes and avoid standing on coral.

  • Low risk: Steep walking track access

The beach is accessed via a narrow, unsealed track from the Cape Edgecumbe walking trail — not suitable for those with mobility issues.

  • Low risk: Sharp reef rocks

The fringing reef has shallow, rocky edges close to shore that can be sharp underfoot.
