Murphy's Reef is a premier boat-access dive and snorkel site located about 5 miles (8 km) west of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. One of three major subtropical reef systems off Mooloolaba (along with Inner and Outer Gneering Reefs), Murphy's Reef features a dramatic underwater landscape of gutters, ledges, caves, and pinnacles ranging from 8 m to 33 m deep. The reef is blanketed in dense coral gardens of hard and soft corals, sponges, and gorgonians that rival the Great Barrier Reef in colour and abundance. The site is renowned among divers for its rich subtropical biodiversity including large pelagics, wobbegong sharks, stingrays, turtles, and an extraordinary variety of nudibranchs — the Sunshine Coast holds the record for the most nudibranch species in Australia.

Moderate risk: Depth (15–28 m)
Requires open-water dive certification; depths exceed safe free-diving limits. Advanced divers recommended for penetration.
Moderate risk: Strong currents
Offshore wreck site can experience moderate to strong currents, especially on outgoing tides.
Moderate risk: Depth range
Depths range from 8 m to 33 m, with deeper pinnacles and ledges requiring good buoyancy control and dive training.
Moderate risk: Ocean Swell and Wind
Exposed reef site easily affected by wind, rain and swell; conditions can shift rapidly.
Moderate risk: Depth and Strong Currents
Dive depths up to 33 m with potential currents around gutters, ledges and pinnacles; requires advanced open-water certification.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Located 2.9 nm offshore in a boating channel; surface marker buoy essential for diver visibility.
Low risk: Cold water (winter)
Winter water temps drop to ~19°C, requiring a wetsuit (5 mm+ recommended) for comfort and safety.
Low risk: Post-cyclone debris
Cyclone Alfred (March 2025) shifted wreck structure; diving is currently external-only. Monitor park updates.
Low risk: Limited visibility
Sandy bottom and plankton blooms can reduce underwater visibility, particularly after wind or rain.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Visibility averages 12 m offshore but can drop to 3 m or reach 30 m; strongly affected by wind, rain, and swell. Clearest after southerly winds.
Low risk: Strong ocean currents
The reef's offshore position exposes it to ocean currents that can be strong, particularly around the deeper gutters and pinnacles.
Low risk: Sea conditions / swell
The site is best enjoyed when the swell is calm. Rough seas can affect visibility and safety; trips are weather-dependent and may be cancelled.
Low risk: Seasickness
The 15-minute boat ride from the Mooloolaba River can be rough for those prone to seasickness, especially in choppy conditions.
