The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

Where the mighty Murchison River meets the Indian Ocean, this wide estuary mouth near Chinaman's Beach offers a unique snorkeling experience at the confluence of river and sea. The turquoise, sheltered waters around the river mouth are fed by daily tidal movements, creating a calm, estuary environment with sandy patches and seagrass beds to explore. The surrounding red Tumblagooda sandstone cliffs contrast brilliantly with the clear aquamarine water, while dolphins occasionally cruise past at sunset. This is a family-friendly spot where the saltwater from the ocean mixes with the freshwater outflow, providing a gently dynamic snorkeling setting.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current at river mouth

The estuary mouth opens to the ocean; outgoing tidal currents can accelerate significantly near the channel. Snorkelers should stay well inside the river and avoid the immediate mouth area.

  • Moderate risk: Tidal flow at river mouth

The sandbar at the mouth shifts with tides and can create strong currents, especially on outgoing tide. Skippers and swimmers warned to exercise caution near the channel.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

When the tide ebbs, water flows from the estuary out to sea, creating a noticeable current near the mouth. Stronger during spring tides.

  • Low risk: Boating traffic

The river mouth is used by fishing and tour boats. Swimmers should stay within designated swimming zones and be aware of vessel movements.

  • Low risk: Stinger jellyfish

Box jellyfish and other stingers can be present in warm estuarine waters during the hotter months. Wear protective clothing.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers (seasonal)

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are occasionally present in warm months (November to May). Wear a stinger suit or check local warnings.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near marina

Boat traffic from the Kalbarri boat hire and marina operates near the river mouth; stay clear of vessel channels.

  • Low risk: Sandbar navigation hazard

The shifting sandbar at the river mouth creates unpredictable depth changes and submerged obstacles, particularly after rain or king tides.

  • Low risk: Strong summer southerly winds

Mid West prevailing southerly winds can reach 30 knots suddenly during summer months, whipping up chop and making return to shore hazardous.
