Mount Martha Beach stretches 2 km along the calm shores of Port Phillip on the Mornington Peninsula, dotted with iconic colourful bathing boxes that make for a picturesque snorkelling backdrop. The gently sloping sandy beach leads to shallow, sheltered waters protected from ocean swell, with a depth range of about 3–5 metres. Several creek gullies provide easy track access to the water. The beach is split into northern and southern sections; the area near the surf lifesaving club offers the best facilities. Snorkellers can explore sandy bottoms with seagrass beds and rocky reef patches near the points, with clear visibility best on calm, high-tide days in summer.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near reef areas

Small boats and jet skis operate in the bay; keep alert near the rocky southern end where snorkellers frequent.

  • Low risk: Stingrays underfoot

Stingrays are common in the shallows; shuffle your feet when entering the water to avoid startling them.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Recreational boats and jet skis use Port Phillip waters. Stay aware and avoid marked boating channels.

  • Low risk: Water gets deep quickly

The shore drops off more steeply than some nearby beaches; keep close watch on children and weak swimmers.
