Mossman River drift snorkeling is a one-of-a-kind freshwater adventure through the ancient Daintree Rainforest, one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests. Unlike traditional ocean snorkeling, you don a mask, snorkel, and river sled — then let the crystal-clear currents carry you downstream through a tunnel of lush green canopy. The water is so pure and clean it's considered some of the finest in Australia. Along the way you'll float past towering strangler figs, moss-covered boulders, and sandy riverbeds teeming with freshwater fish. The tour combines an upstream trek over rounded river stones with thrilling faster-flowing sections, tranquil drifting pools, and an interpretive rainforest walk. It's a perfect introduction to snorkeling in a protected, non-tidal environment before venturing to the Great Barrier Reef.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Flash flooding after heavy rain

After heavy rain, the river can rise rapidly, increasing current speed and reducing visibility. Tours may be cancelled in flood conditions.

  • Low risk: River current

The river has sections with moderate current that can push swimmers into rocks or overhanging vegetation. Ability to paddle and steer a river sled is required.

  • Low risk: Slippery uneven riverbed

The riverbed consists of round, loose rocks and uneven terrain. Walking upstream requires balance and sturdy footwear (provided).

  • Low risk: Tree-root river exit

Exiting the river requires climbing 1-2 feet up tree-root steps, similar to a ladder. Requires upper and lower body strength.
