The Mossman River Drift Snorkel is a one-of-a-kind freshwater adventure through the ancient Daintree Rainforest, where you trek upstream through shallow, sandy riverbeds and then float back down on a sturdy river sled, snorkelling through crystal-clear water beneath a dense rainforest canopy. Unlike ocean snorkelling, this experience immerses you in a pristine jungle river environment, with faster-flowing sections alongside calm pools where you can simply lean back and gaze up at towering trees. This is a guided tour only — a unique blend of river trekking, paddling, and drifting that offers a thrilling, intimate way to explore one of the world's oldest rainforests.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Flash flooding risk after heavy rain

Rainfall in the catchment can rapidly increase river flow and reduce visibility. The tour may be cancelled during flood warnings.

  • Moderate risk: Flash flood / increased flow after rain

After heavy rain, the river can flow faster and more powerfully, making the drift more adventurous and requiring greater control.

  • Moderate risk: Water confidence required

Participants must be able to swim confidently, tread water, and paddle their river sled — not suitable for non-swimmers.

  • Low risk: River current

The river has sections of moderate to fast-flowing current, especially after rainfall. Snorkellers drift downstream and must be comfortable navigating these dynamic waters.

  • Low risk: Uneven riverbed with loose rocks

The riverbed contains round, loose rocks and uneven terrain. Walking upstream requires balance and care.

  • Low risk: Deep water sections requiring treading water

Some sections of the river are deeper, requiring participants to tread water. All participants must be confident swimmers.

  • Low risk: River exit climb via tree roots

The tour finishes with a short climb out of the river using tree-root steps, approximately 1-2 feet high, requiring upper and lower body strength.

  • Low risk: Uneven riverbed (loose rocks)

The riverbed consists of loose, round rocks and uneven terrain that requires balance and care when walking upstream.

  • Low risk: Variable depth / deeper sections

Though the river is generally shallow enough to stand, there are deeper sections where treading water is necessary.

  • Low risk: River exit via tree-root steps

Exiting the river may involve climbing 1-2 feet up tree-root steps, requiring grip and lower body strength.
