Mornington Pier extends 200 metres into the calm, sheltered waters of Port Phillip Bay on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. The pier's wooden pylons are encrusted with colourful sponges, sea squirts, and hydroids, creating a thriving artificial reef. Snorkellers can glide alongside the structure spotting schools of silver fish, rays, and the occasional weedy seadragon. The shallow, protected waters make this an ideal spot for beginners and families, with excellent visibility in the summer months. Schnapper Point's sandy beach provides easy shore entry.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Fishing lines and hooks

The pier is fished heavily; stray lines and hooks are abundant around the pylons. A dive knife or line cutter is strongly advised.

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic

Active wharf with boats sheltering on the eastern side and general vessel movements near the pier. Snorkellers should stay clear of boat lanes and use a surface marker buoy.

  • Moderate risk: Unpatrolled beach

The swimming and snorkeling area at Schnapper Point is not patrolled by lifeguards; swim with caution.

  • Low risk: Strong northerly winds and westerly swells

Northerly winds and westerly swells can create hazardous conditions. Best dived with light to moderate south-westerly to easterly winds.

  • Low risk: Entry/exit via high wall

Entry is via a 3-metre giant stride from the car park wall or a stone ledge; exit requires climbing back onto the ledge and wall, which can be strenuous.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near pier

Active boat ramp and marina traffic around Mornington Pier; stay aware of vessels entering and leaving the channel.

  • Low risk: Strong currents on offshore reefs

Subtidal reefs beyond the immediate pier area can experience strong tidal currents, especially on outgoing tides.
