Mooloolaba Reef comprises a cluster of offshore dive and snorkel sites — Inner Gneering Reef, Outer Gneering Reef, and Murphy's Reef — situated on the Gneering Shoal about 5 km east of Mooloolaba on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. These granite and sandstone reef systems rise from sandy seafloor to within 3–8 m of the surface, offering snorkelers and divers a chance to explore rocky ledges, swim-throughs, and vibrant marine habitats. The sites are boat-access only and are known for clear winter water visibility, hard and soft corals, and encounters with turtles, wobbegong sharks, rays, and schools of tropical fish. Outer Gneering Reef drops to deeper terraces, while Inner Gneering and Murphy's Reef provide shallower areas suitable for intermediate snorkelers in calm conditions.

Moderate risk: Ocean Swell & Surge
Exposed offshore reefs can experience significant ocean swell and surge, especially from November to May when seas are less settled. Snorkeling is often cancelled 50% of the time in summer.
Moderate risk: Ocean Swell & Surge (Summer)
From December to May, ocean swell and surge remain elevated, making conditions challenging for snorkeling.
Moderate risk: Strong Currents
Tidal currents can sweep across the shoal, particularly around Outer Gneering Reef where depth changes create rips.
Moderate risk: Ocean current
Offshore reef system subject to prevailing ocean currents that can carry snorkelers away from the reef structure.
Moderate risk: Depth & distance from shore
The reef top sits at approximately 13 m depth, requiring strong swimming fitness and comfort in deep open water far from land.
Low risk: Boat Traffic
These sites are accessed exclusively by boat. Snorkelers must stay aware of dive boats, charter vessels, and marine traffic in the channel.
Low risk: Cool Water Temperature (Winter)
From June to October water temperatures drop to 20–22°C, requiring a wetsuit for comfort and safety during extended snorkeling.
Low risk: Marine stingers (seasonal)
Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present in Queensland coastal waters during warmer months.
