Mission Beach's offshore reefs — including Beaver Reef and Eddy Reef — are among the closest outer Great Barrier Reef sites to the mainland, just 40 km offshore and 90 minutes by boat from Clump Point. These Green Zone (no-fishing) marine parks boast pristine coral gardens, bommies, walls, and shelves rising within metres of the surface. Snorkellers swim among giant clams, anemonefish, angelfish, sea turtles, and reef sharks in crystal-clear waters with visibility typically 10–20 metres. The remote location means smaller crowds and a more intimate reef experience than the busier Cairns sectors.

  • Moderate risk: Marine Stingers (Box Jellyfish / Irukandji)

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in coastal and reef waters during the warmer months, from November to May.

  • Low risk: Tidal Currents

Strong tidal currents can sweep around reef bommies and channels, especially on the outer reef.

  • Low risk: Open Water Boat Journey

The boat journey to the outer reef can be rough in windy conditions, lasting 90 minutes on open water.

  • Low risk: Sharp Coral

Coral can be sharp and abrasive; contact may cause cuts or abrasions.
