Ellen Cove is the sheltered southern nook of Middleton Beach, cupped between King Point and Mount Adelaide in Albany's King George Sound. Sheltered from the strongest swells by King Head and the offshore islands, the cove features a long sandy beach with a floating pontoon for jumping and diving, a seasonal swimming enclosure being developed, and the scenic Ellen Cove Boardwalk climbing above the rocky headland. On calm days the clear, protected waters are ideal for beginner snorkelers exploring the sandy shallows and seagrass beds, while the adjacent parklands, cafés, public toilets, and picnic terraces make it a perfect family-friendly swimming and snorkelling destination.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Seasonal wind chop

Winter winds from the south-west can whip up surface chop even in this sheltered cove, reducing visibility and making swimming more strenuous.

  • Low risk: Pontoon swim distance

The floating pontoon is a popular jump platform but requires a good swimmer to reach from shore; less confident swimmers should exercise caution.

  • Low risk: Marine traffic near jetty

The Ellen Cove jetty and nearby boat ramp see occasional small vessel traffic; snorkellers near the jetty should stay aware.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current near jetty

A mild current can develop around the jetty and pontoon area during outgoing tides, which may pull inexperienced swimmers slightly offshore.

  • Low risk: Winter storm swell

Although sheltered, strong winter storms can create larger, unpredictable waves that roll into the cove, especially June through August.

  • Low risk: Jellyfish

Blooms of jellyfish occur occasionally during the warmer summer months, particularly January and February.
