The Abandoned Underwater Observatory on Middle Island, Keppel Bay, is a hauntingly beautiful relic of Australia's 1980s reef tourism. Once the largest underwater observatory in Australia, visitors descended six metres below sea level through a submerged chamber to view coral and fish. Closed since 2010 and battered by cyclones Ului and Debbie, the rusting structure now functions as an artificial reef — encrusted with marine growth and teeming with schools of tropical fish. Snorkelers can swim around and through the decaying observatory, weaving past honeycomb cod, flowery cod, damsel fish, moon wrasse, and gropers that have claimed the structure as their home. The eerie, sun-dappled steel tower rising from the seabed offers a uniquely atmospheric snorkeling experience on the southern fringe of the Great Barrier Reef.

Moderate risk: Rusted metal structure
The observatory structure is rusted, deteriorating, and has sharp exposed metal edges. Snorkelers should avoid touching the structure to prevent cuts and injury.
Moderate risk: Strong currents and swell
The area is exposed to ocean swells and strong tidal currents, especially around the point near Olive Headland.
Low risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish) are present in Keppel Bay waters during the warmer months, typically October through May.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic accessing the island and observatory area requires vigilance when snorkeling near the surface.
