Mettam's Pool is a sheltered natural limestone reef pool within Marmion Marine Park on Perth's northern coastline, just north of Trigg Beach. The limestone reef creates a calm, shallow lagoon (1–6 m deep) protected from the open ocean swell, making it one of Perth's most popular and family-friendly snorkeling destinations. Snorkelers explore a maze of limestone gutters, troughs, and small caves teeming with marine life. The pool stretches roughly 600 m along the shore and offers crystal-clear waters on calm summer days, with easy shore access via stairs from West Coast Drive.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Surge and swell

Onshore swell and waves breaking over the reef can create surge and reduced visibility, especially when westerly winds pick up after midday.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Tidal currents can develop, particularly around the change of tide, making it harder for inexperienced swimmers.

  • Low risk: Shallow reef and rocky entry

The limestone reef shelf is very shallow at low tide and the entry beach has scattered rocks. Care needed when entering and exiting.

  • Low risk: Reef surge and swell

Surge and breaking waves can push snorkellers onto the shallow reef when conditions are rough, especially in afternoon sea breezes.

  • Low risk: Unpatrolled beach

No lifeguards patrol this beach; snorkellers must assess conditions themselves.

  • Low risk: Swell surge on outer reef edge

When swell is above 1.5 m, surge can push snorkelers into sharp limestone on the outer reef edge. Best on calm days.

  • Low risk: Sharp limestone reef

The limestone platform is very sharp and can cause cuts if you stand or slip. Wear reef shoes or booties.

  • Low risk: Strong afternoon sea breeze

Afternoon south-westerly winds can pick up, creating choppy surface conditions inside the pool and making exit tricky.

  • Low risk: Low tide exposure

At very low tides the pool becomes very shallow (under 1 m), reducing snorkeling space and increasing risk of scraping against reef.
