Nestled along the rugged Warrnambool coast, Merri Marine Sanctuary spans 29 hectares from Thunder Point to Breakwater Rock, protecting a remarkable mosaic of intertidal rock platforms, subtidal calcarenite reefs, and sandy seabeds. The cold, crystal-clear Southern Ocean waters nourish dense kelp forests that sway between Middle and Merri Islands — the remains of an ancient sand dune — where colorful sponges, rock lobsters, and abundant fish life hide beneath overhangs and in crevices. The rich canyon between the two islands is a snorkeler's highlight, packed with marine life in oxygen-charged waters.
