Mermaid Pool is a stunning natural rockpool nestled on the rugged Bay of Fires coastline in northeast Tasmania, near Sloop Reef Campground. This crystal-clear pool measures approximately 3 metres deep and sits just above the high-tide mark, perched on the edge of a rocky point with sweeping ocean views. Surrounded by orange lichen-covered dolerite boulders, the calm azure waters create a private, sheltered oasis perfect for snorkelling and refreshing dips. Its dramatic setting — suspended above the wild Tasman Sea — makes it one of the East Coast's most photogenic and sought-after hidden gems for adventurous swimmers and snorkelers alike.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Unpatrolled location

No lifeguards or emergency services on site. Swim at your own risk.

  • Moderate risk: Unpatrolled Shore

There are no lifeguards or patrols at this remote location. Rescue or emergency assistance may be delayed. Swim and snorkel at your own risk.

  • Low risk: Tidal changes

The pool is only fully formed and accessible at mid-to-high tide; at low tide the water level drops significantly.

  • Low risk: Slippery rocks

Granite boulders surrounding the pool become very slippery when wet, especially during entry and exit.

  • Low risk: Incoming/Outgoing Tide

Mermaid Pool sits just above the high-tide mark; at high tide waves can wash over the rocks and at low tide the pool may be significantly shallower or disconnected. Check tide times before entering.

  • Low risk: Swell Overtopping

During rough sea conditions, waves can unexpectedly wash over the rock ledges into the pool, potentially sweeping swimmers against rocks or out to sea.
