Tucked into the rocky coastline near Bridport in North East Tasmania, Mermaids Pool is a natural tidal plunge pool ringed by distinctive orange lichen-covered dolerite boulders. At high tide, crystal-clear water fills this sheltered hollow to roughly three metres deep, creating a calm, warm haven perfect for a relaxing dip or snorkel. The pool's rocky walls buffer it from ocean swells, offering safe, lagoon-like conditions that contrast beautifully with the wilder adjacent beaches of the Bay of Fires region.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Tide-dependent water level

The pool is only fully formed at high tide; at low tide it may be too shallow for safe snorkelling entry.

  • Low risk: Slippery rocks

Slippery orange lichen-covered dolerite rocks surround the pool, particularly hazardous when wet.

  • Low risk: Unpatrolled swimming area

The pool is unpatrolled — no lifeguard on duty.

  • Low risk: Tide-dependent access

Mermaids Pool is only filled and swimmable at high tide; at low tide the pool may be shallow or empty.

  • Low risk: Uneven entry surface

Entry is over natural rock with no formal steps or handrails, requiring care when climbing in and out.

  • Low risk: Tide-dependent depth

The pool is best at high tide; at low tide water levels drop significantly, exposing sharp granite edges and reducing depth for safe snorkeling.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

At high tide, an outgoing current can create a gentle but noticeable flow through the pool's opening to the sea; inexperienced swimmers should stay aware.

  • Low risk: Tidal Timing

The pool is best and most safely accessed at high tide. At low tide water levels drop significantly, reducing swimming depth and exposing sharp rock edges.

  • Low risk: Swell Surge

On days with high swell or rough Bass Strait conditions, waves can surge over the rock barrier. Best visited during calm weather and low swell.
