Tucked along the wild north-east coast of Tasmania near Bridport, Mermaids Beach is home to the Mermaid Pool — a deep, crystalline natural rock pool carved into dolerite boulders. About 3 metres deep in places, the pool is filled by the incoming tide and offers gin-clear water perfect for floating, snorkeling, and marveling at the surreal orange lichen-covered rocks that surround it. Part of the famed Bay of Fires coastline, the setting is stunningly photogenic: turquoise water against warm-hued granite, with a wild, untamed feel that makes every visit feel like a secret discovery.

Low risk: Rising tide / tidal inflow
The pool fills and flushes with the incoming tide — entering near a tidal channel can be dangerous as water rushes in. Check tide charts before visiting.
Low risk: Slippery rock surfaces
The dolerite boulders surrounding the pool are often slippery due to spray and lichen, making scrambling and entry/exit treacherous.
Low risk: Drop-offs and depth changes
The pool is approximately 3 metres deep in places with sudden drop-offs. Not ideal for weak swimmers or unsupervised children.
Low risk: Rocks at low tide bar
Granite rocks outcrop across the low tide sand bar, creating uneven footing and potential for slips or cuts when entering the water at low tide.
Low risk: Tidal changes in Mermaids Pool
The natural rockpool is most prominent at high tide; at low tide the pool may be shallower or less defined, affecting entry and snorkeling conditions.
