Mazie Bay, on the western side of uninhabited North Keppel Island, is a serene snorkeling destination within the Keppel Bay Islands National Park. The bay's fringing reef lies just a short swim from the sandy shore, offering easy access to vibrant coral gardens and the clear, calm waters of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. At very low tides, the reef flats are exposed, providing a unique opportunity for reef walking. With only a single bush camping site on the island, visitors can experience a true sense of solitude surrounded by untouched island wilderness.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in the Southern Great Barrier Reef during the warmer months.

  • Low risk: Exposed reef at low tide

The fringing reef at Mazie Bay becomes exposed at very low tides, which can cause snorkelers to be stranded over shallow coral or injure themselves on sharp reef edges.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Strong tidal flows can develop in the channels around North Keppel Island, potentially sweeping snorkelers away from the bay.

  • Low risk: Remote island isolation

Access to North Keppel Island is by boat only; no on-site medical facilities or phone reception in many areas.
