Mattingleys Beach is one of several sheltered sandy coves lining the Bridport foreshore on Tasmania's north-east coast, within easy reach of the town centre. Nestled between granite headlands and backed by native coastal vegetation, the beach offers calm, protected waters that are ideal for a relaxed snorkel. The clear Bass Strait waters here host temperate marine life, and the adjacent rocky outcrops provide interesting nooks to explore. Its family-friendly conditions, easy shore access, and proximity to the Bridport township make it a convenient and safe introduction to Tasmanian cold-water snorkeling.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Rocky points at low tide

Low rocky points border the beach and extend into the shallows, requiring care when entering or exiting the water at low tide.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near headlands

Occasional small boat traffic near the rocky headlands at the beach margins can create wake and visibility issues.

  • Low risk: Rip currents

Ocean conditions can produce rip currents; swim between the flags when available and never swim alone.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Tasmanian waters are cool year-round; a wetsuit is strongly recommended for comfort and safety.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers

Jellyfish and bluebottles may occasionally be present, particularly in warmer months.

  • Low risk: Variable tides and currents

As a sheltered beach within Bridport's foreshore, conditions are generally calm, but tidal movement near the rocky headlands can create localised currents. Check local tide charts before entering.

  • Low risk: Rocks and reef hazards

Granite rock outcrops at the beach margins can be slippery and uneven when wet. Snorkelers should wear appropriate footwear and avoid climbing on rocks.
