Better known as Sydney's premier surf beach, Maroubra Beach also harbours an exceptional snorkelling zone off its southern headland. Here, a rocky reef platform extends into the Pacific, with calm rockpools at the base teeming with small fish and crustaceans. Just offshore lie the wrecks of the SS Tekapo (1899) and TSS Belbowrie (1939), surrounded by iron plates, girders, and prolific fishlife. The underwater terrain features a jumble of rocky walls, boulders, sandy gutters, and a small amphitheatre-like cave — a playground for confident snorkelers. Water quality has been excellent since the deep ocean outfall opened in 1990, making this a reliable year-round urban escape.

Moderate risk: Surf and Swell Conditions
Maroubra is an open-ocean beach with consistent surf; snorkelling the southern headland is only safe when the surf is flat at the southern end and there is no strong rip flowing out past the rock pool.
Moderate risk: Rip Current Near Rock Pool
A common rip current forms adjacent to the southern rock pool, which can sweep snorkelers out. Best snorkelled on an incoming tide.
Low risk: Rocky Shore Entry
Entry and exit are over a narrow rock platform with a large rock outcrop to negotiate at high tide. Slippery rocks and uneven footing require care.
Low risk: Strong Current on South Side
A current often flows past the southern rock pool; snorkelers should stay low and use the rocks for hand-holds if needed.
