Just north of Perth, Marmion Marine Park is a snorkelling and diving playground of submerged limestone reefs, intricate ledges, caves, and swim-through channels set in crystal-clear lagoons. The park stretches from Trigg Island to Burns Beach, with easy shore access at Mettams Pool — a protected nearshore snorkel spot. The reef systems harbour colourful gorgonian corals, and the waters are home to dolphins, sea lions, rays, and seabirds. Between September and December, migrating humpback whales pass through the park. Private dive charters explore offshore sites like Boyinaboat Reef and Wanneroo Reef.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong swell and surge

Offshore reefs are exposed to ocean swell and can develop hazardous surge conditions, especially in winter. Many sites should only be accessed in good weather.

  • Moderate risk: Swell and Surge

Exposed limestone reefs can experience significant ocean swell and surge, particularly in winter (June to August), creating strong water movement around ledges and swim-throughs.

  • Low risk: Swell and surf conditions

Inshore sites can be affected by swell; best snorkelled on calm days with low swell (<1m).

  • Low risk: Sharp limestone reef

The limestone reef has sharp edges and crevices; wear reef shoes or fins to avoid cuts.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near launch sites

Some inshore areas near Hillarys Boat Harbour and Ocean Reef may see boat traffic. Stay aware in marked channels.

  • Low risk: Stinger jellyfish (summer months)

Warmer waters from December to March may bring stinger jellyfish near inshore reefs.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The offshore reefs are popular with dive charters, fishing boats and recreational vessels. Snorkellers need to stay vigilant and use a dive flag or SMB.

  • Low risk: Strong currents

Oceanic swells and tidal flows can create moderate currents, particularly near reef channels and the outer reef ledges.

  • Low risk: Strong Afternoon Sea Breezes

Summer sea breezes can create challenging surface conditions for snorkellers returning to shore.
