Maori Wrasse Bommie sits in the north-western corner of Lady Elliot Island's reef, a scattered bommie garden over a sandy bottom at 5–21m depth. Named for the famously friendly resident Maori wrasse, this site features broken sandy terrain with small bommies, boulders, and vast fields of staghorn coral where turtles regularly sleep in nooks and crannies. White-tip reef sharks rest on the sand around the bommie, while trumpetfish, malabar grouper, and moorish idols drift through the coral. It's a quintessential Southern Great Barrier Reef snorkel experience offering close encounters with some of the reef's most charismatic species.

Low risk: Tidal currents
Currents can be moderate around the bommie area, especially on the western side of the island. Tidal flow may affect snorkelers.
Low risk: Reef sharks
White-tip reef sharks are resident but generally non-aggressive. Maintain respectful distance.
