Nicknamed 'The Aquarium' for its dazzling abundance of fish, Mantaray Bay on the northern tip of Hook Island is a snorkelling wonderland. Hundreds of shimmering damselfish, friendly giant Maori wrasse (including the famous 'George'), and seasonal manta rays glide through crystal-clear waters. Granite boulders, underwater caves, valleys, swim-throughs, and two striking manta ray sculptures add to the underwater intrigue. The fringing reef sits metres from the beach in calm, sheltered waters, making it a top-tier Whitsundays snorkel destination.

Moderate risk: Shallow reef at low tide
Best snorkelling at mid to high tide — reef lies close to the surface at low tide, increasing risk of contact with coral.
Low risk: Cyclone-damaged reef (recovering)
Cyclone Debbie (March 2017) caused significant damage to the reef system. Coral is still recovering, with some areas of broken/dead coral.
Low risk: Manta ray presence (seasonal)
Manta rays are more commonly sighted during the cooler winter months, especially May to September.
