Mantaray Bay sits at the northern tip of Hook Island in the Whitsundays, a sheltered pocket of turquoise water where the Great Barrier Reef's inner fringing reefs meet the open Coral Sea. True to its name, this bay is one of the best places in the region to see massive manta rays gliding through clear, plankton-rich waters. Beyond the rays, snorkelers drift over vibrant coral gardens teeming with parrotfish, angelfish, and clownfish, while sea turtles and reef sharks patrol the reef edges. Underwater caves, valleys, and swim-throughs add a sense of adventure. Protected under Great Barrier Reef Marine Park management, Mantaray Bay offers world-class snorkeling in a pristine, remote island setting.

Moderate risk: Northerly wind & swell exposure
Mantaray Bay is fully exposed to northerly winds and swell. Even a slight northerly breeze creates choppy conditions and reduced visibility. Avoid on windy days.
Moderate risk: Stinger jellyfish (box jellyfish & Irukandji)
Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) and Irukandji jellyfish are present in Whitsunday waters, especially during the warmer months. Stinger suits are provided by tour operators and strongly recommended.
Low risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can sweep through the channels around Hook Island, particularly on the northern exposed side. Snorkel with a guide and heed their safety briefings.
Low risk: Remote location – no on-site facilities
The bay is a remote island location with no on-site medical facilities. Any injury or marine sting requires evacuation by boat. Snorkel within your ability and stay with your group.
