South West Solitary Island is the southernmost of the Solitary Islands, lying 36 km northeast of Coffs Harbour in the protected Solitary Islands Marine Park. This remote, rocky island sits at the convergence of tropical and temperate waters, creating a biodiversity hotspot with over 550 fish species and 90 coral types. Snorkelers are treated to dramatic granite boulder formations, kelp gardens, and subtropical corals in crystal-clear oceanic water. The island's isolation and marine-park protection mean exceptional water quality and abundant marine encounters with grey nurse sharks, blue groper, turtles, and wobbegong sharks patrolling the reef edges. Popular among experienced snorkelers, tours depart from Coffs Harbour.

High risk: Depth and Rapid Ascent Risk
Mooring is in 21m of water; inexperienced snorkelers/divers can exceed depth limits or ascend too rapidly, risking decompression sickness.
Moderate risk: Depth hazard
The wall drops from 10-15m to 30m at the sand line. Snorkellers must stay at the shallow plateau top and should be strong swimmers confident in deep open water.
Moderate risk: Boat access only
Located 30-40 minutes offshore. Requires a charter boat from Coffs Harbour Marina. No shore access available.
Moderate risk: Strong Ocean Currents
The East Australian Current can produce strong north-to-south currents around the island, making entry and exit difficult and increasing the risk of being swept away from the boat/group.
Moderate risk: Depth & Decompression Risk
Archie's Cave ranges from 12–25 m depth; snorkelers must be comfortable holding breath to appreciate the cave fully, and divers risk rapid ascents or decompression sickness if depth limits are mismanaged.
Moderate risk: Sea Swell & Exposed Location
South Solitary Island is fully exposed to the Pacific Ocean. Swell can surge through the cave entrance, creating hazardous conditions for snorkelers inside the cavern.
Moderate risk: Exposed Offshore Location
South Solitary Island is 8km offshore and fully exposed to open ocean swells and changing weather conditions. Boat access only.
Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents
Exposed ocean conditions can produce strong currents and surge around the island's rocky edges, especially on incoming tides.
Low risk: Open ocean swell and surge
Surge is common shallower than 10m and can be strong on spring tides or during southerly swells. Northerly winds create surface chop.
Low risk: Ocean currents
East Australian Current eddies create mild east-to-west flow. Currents are generally predictable but can increase on spring tides.
Low risk: Cool water temperatures
Winter water temp drops to ~18°C (July). Snorkellers need appropriate wetsuit thickness (5-7mm) to avoid cold shock.
Low risk: Restricted Access (Marine Park)
The island is a restricted area — landing is prohibited without permits. Snorkeling is only accessible via licensed charter boat operators from Coffs Harbour.
Low risk: Southerly/easterly wind swell
Southerly and easterly winds can quickly whip up conditions, reducing visibility and making boat access difficult.
Low risk: Boat-only access (no beach landing)
The island has no landing beach — entry and exit are by boat only, requiring a confident ladder or giant-stride entry over potentially surging conditions.
Low risk: Shark presence
Bull sharks and grey nurse sharks are known to frequent the area — the latter are generally non-aggressive but their presence can startle.
