Mallacoota Inlet is a stunning, large estuarine system in far-east Gippsland, Victoria, within Croajingolong National Park — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The sheltered lake areas (Top Lake, Bottom Lake, and the winding inlet channels) offer calm, tea-tree-stained waters surrounded by dense bushland, creating a peaceful snorkeling environment. The shallow, sandy-bottomed lakes are protected from ocean swell, making them ideal for relaxed underwater exploration, with pockets of seagrass and submerged timber providing habitat for fish. The inlet's dark, tannin-rich waters offer unique visibility conditions best enjoyed on calm, overcast days.

Low risk: Boat traffic in narrow channels
Power boats and fishing vessels use the inlet channels; stay clear of marked navigation routes and keep to the shallows near the edges.
Low risk: Stinger jellyfish (summer)
Warmer months can bring jellyfish into the estuarine lakes; wear a stinger suit or rash vest for protection.
Low risk: Variable tannin-stained visibility
The tea-coloured freshwater runoff reduces underwater visibility, especially after rain. Best snorkeling is on calm days with minimal wind.
