Nestled within the Croajingolong National Park along Victoria's remote far-east coast, Mallacoota's general diving and snorkeling area encompasses the sheltered waters of Mallacoota Inlet and nearby surf-exposed ocean beaches. The inlet offers calmer, estuarine conditions with sandy bottoms and seagrass beds near the town jetty and Bastion Point, while the ocean side rewards more experienced snorkelers with rocky reefs, gutters, and bomboras. This biodiverse corner of Gippsland is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, known for clear coastal waters, abundant fish life, and stunning granite boulder formations sculpted by Southern Ocean swells.

Moderate risk: Southern Ocean swell
Ocean-side spots can receive powerful, unpredictable swells from the Southern Ocean, creating strong dumpers and rip currents.
Moderate risk: Rip currents
Beach and ocean-entry locations may have strong rip currents, especially around rocky headlands and gutters.
Low risk: Limited visibility after rain
Heavy rainfall can drastically reduce visibility in the inlet due to freshwater runoff and sediment suspension.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The inlet and entrance channel can have recreational and fishing boat traffic; be visible near navigation channels.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Water temperatures range from 13–18°C year-round; cold shock and hypothermia risk without adequate wetsuit.
