Stretching 3 kilometres along the Sapphire Coast, Main Beach (Merimbula Beach) offers a wide, patrolled shoreline ideal for both swimming and snorkeling. Accessed via Ford Park off Ocean Drive, this north-facing beach is sheltered enough to provide calm conditions for families and casual snorkelers. The gentle surf and clear waters near the northern end, where the beach meets Merimbula Bar, create excellent visibility for spotting fish and exploring sandy-bottom shallows. With picnic tables, showers, and a nearby café, it's a classic South Coast beach day-out.

Moderate risk: Rips and surf break
When the swell picks up, rips can form along the beach, particularly near the lake entrance. Swim between the flags during patrol hours.
Low risk: Boat traffic near lake entrance
The northern end near the Merimbula Lake entrance sees boat and jet ski traffic exiting the lake, creating a collision hazard for snorkellers.
Low risk: Surf rips at north end
Rip currents can develop near the Merimbula Bar end of the beach, especially on larger swell days.
Low risk: Changing tides near bar entrance
Tidal movement across the sandbar at the northern end can create shifting currents and shallow sandbanks.
