The Mackerel Islands — consisting of Thevenard and Direction Islands among 10 islets — sit just north of the Ningaloo Reef in the Pilbara, offering pristine fringing reefs and coral bombies accessible straight from the beach. This remote archipelago is a snorkeling paradise where you can drift over vibrant coral gardens teeming with reef fish, sea turtles, and rays. Low tides reveal calm, crystal-clear waters perfect for exploring the island's snorkel trail, with boat-accessible bommies for more adventurous explorers. An untouched wilderness with world-class marine biodiversity.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Tropical marine stingers such as box jellyfish may be present in warm Pilbara waters, particularly during summer months.

  • Low risk: Strong currents and tides

Tidal movements around the islands can create currents, especially near reef channels and bommies. Snorkellers should be aware of changing tide conditions.

  • Low risk: Remote location

The islands are remote with limited immediate medical facilities. Snorkellers should be self-sufficient and carry communication equipment.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near moorings

The main boat mooring area and snorkel trail sites see vessel traffic. Snorkellers should be vigilant near boat channels and mooring zones.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral and reef hazards

Fringing reefs and coral bombies have sharp edges. Snorkellers should wear protective footwear and avoid touching coral to prevent cuts.
