Luncheon Bay, on the northern edge of Hook Island in the Whitsunday Islands, is a premier snorkelling destination within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Sheltered from southerly winds, the bay features a fringing reef teeming with coral gardens and marine life. The bay is renowned for its vibrant coral formations, a submerged canyon (accessible to divers), and clear calm waters. Snorkellers regularly encounter clownfish ('Nemo'), turtles, manta rays, Maori wrasse, and occasionally reef sharks. The bay is a favourite stop on Whitsundays sailing and snorkelling tours, offering easy shore-entry or boat-based swimming in crystal-clear tropical waters.

Getting in
Luncheon Bay is located on the northern edge of Hook Island, part of the Whitsunday Islands in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Access is primarily by commercial snorkel tour, private charter, or sailing vessel departing from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, or Shute Harbour. The bay is a popular stop on Whitsundays day tours.
No on-site parking. Vehicles can be left in paid long-term parking at Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach terminals where tours depart from.
Day tours from Airlie Beach/Hamilton Island range from A$200–$350 per adult, including snorkel gear, stinger suits, lunch, and safety briefings.
