Llewellyn Reef is a pristine, untouched coral reef deep within the Capricorn–Bunker Group of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, about 90 minutes by boat from the Town of 1770. This offshore stewardship site dazzles with vibrant hard coral gardens, dramatic reef walls, swim-throughs, and sandy channels. Renowned for exceptional coral cover, it offers protected pockets that create ideal snorkeling conditions. Encounter green and loggerhead turtles, manta rays (seasonally), reef sharks, tasselled wobbegongs, and kaleidoscopic schools of trevally, fusiliers, butterflyfish, and angelfish. The reef is cared for by a local Site Stewardship program, ensuring its health and biodiversity for future generations.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Tidal currents

Strong tidal currents can sweep through the reef channels and swim-throughs, requiring confident swimming ability.

  • Moderate risk: Offshore weather conditions

Exposed offshore location; conditions can change rapidly with wind and swell making the bar crossing potentially challenging.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers

Marine stingers (including box jellyfish) are present in Southern Great Barrier Reef waters during the warmer months.

  • Low risk: 1770 bar crossing conditions

The bar crossing at the 1770 harbour entrance can be rough and may affect trip schedules depending on tide and swell.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral and reef edges

Sharp coral bommies and reef ledges present a risk of cuts and abrasions to snorkelers who stray too close.

  • Low risk: Open ocean boat crossing

The reef is accessed via a 90-minute boat trip from 1770, crossing the open ocean and potentially a bar crossing at the estuary mouth.

  • Low risk: Marine life awareness

Seasonal manta ray and shark presence requires respectful distance. Currents can be moderate around reef walls.
