Lizard Island's Clam Gardens in Watsons Bay is a world-class snorkeling destination on the northern Great Barrier Reef. This shallow, protected bay is home to an extraordinary congregation of giant clams (Tridacna gigas) scattered among vibrant coral gardens. Snorkelers can float through sandy channels between coral bommies at high tide, spotting tawny nurse sharks resting inside giant clams, blacktip reef sharks, and myriad reef fish. The nearby Chinaman's Ridge offers a more adventurous drift along a coral ridge. Crystal-clear waters, minimal current, and easy beach access make this a must-visit reef site accessible only by air from Cairns.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji) are present in tropical North Queensland waters, typically during the warmer months.
Low risk: Low tide exposure
The Clam Gardens are best snorkeled at high tide when water depth is sufficient to avoid damaging coral and to navigate easily. Exposed coral at low tide makes entry difficult.
Low risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can occur around the fringing reef edges, particularly near Chinaman's Ridge and the outer reef drop-offs.
