Tucked into the sheltered northern curve of Walgun (Cape Byron), Little Wategos Beach is a secluded 150m-long gem protected from prevailing winds and offering stunning ocean views. Accessible only via a walking track through coastal heath, this pristine beach feels like a secret hideaway beneath the Cape Byron Lighthouse. Moderate risk: Cape Byron currents
Strong ocean currents can sweep south past Cape Byron. Swimming out toward the cape is particularly hazardous as currents can pull swimmers offshore.
Low risk: Shark presence
Bull sharks and other shark species are present in the Byron Bay area. Shark sightings and beach closures are not uncommon along this stretch of coast.
Low risk: Difficult beach access track
The beach is accessible via a 600m walking track with numerous steps, steep slopes, and unpaved sections with tree roots and rocks. Wheelchair access requires assistance.
Low risk: Tidal access restrictions
Tides and sand movement can affect access to the beach. At high tide the beach may be significantly reduced or inaccessible.
