Little Salmon Bay is a serene, south-facing bay on Rottnest Island, sheltered by limestone rocks and grassy dunes that keep the lagoon calm and wind-protected. A 700-metre marked snorkel trail winds through the Parker Point Marine Sanctuary, featuring 10 interpretive buoys that guide you past shallow limestone reefs, vibrant coral gardens, and algae forests. With crystal-clear, never-deep waters, this trail is an underwater classroom — expect to see black scalyfins, Green Moon Wrasse, Western King Wrasse, Western Buffalo Bream, and the occasional Western Rock Lobster sneaking through the seagrass.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Afternoon sea breeze

Winds pick up significantly in the afternoon, creating choppy surface conditions and reduced visibility for snorkellers.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near trail entry

The bay entrance area can see boats and ferries; stay within the marked snorkel trail boundaries.

  • Low risk: Limited facilities

No toilets, drinking water, or food outlets at the bay itself; the nearest toilets are a short walk away at Parker Point.

  • Low risk: Strong southerly winds

Strong southerly winds can create choppy surface conditions and reduced visibility, particularly in summer (December to March).

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Like all Rottnest beaches, currents can shift with tidal movements; always check conditions before entering the water.

  • Low risk: Sharp limestone reef

Sharp limestone reef edges and rock platforms along the snorkel trail can cause cuts if contacted.
