Lipson Cove, on the eastern Eyre Peninsula facing Spencer Gulf, is a serene sandy bay sheltered by dunes and dotted with the remains of an 1882 jetty. Just 150 m offshore, Lipson Island Conservation Park protects a thriving little penguin colony, black-faced cormorants, and crested terns. The crystal-clear waters are home to bottlenose dolphins and visiting southern right whales, with gentle surf and rock pools that make this a captivating snorkeling destination. A short walk across the tidal sandbar at low tide connects you to the island — just keep an eye on the tide.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Tidal cutoff to Lipson Island

The sandbar connecting the beach to Lipson Island is only exposed at low tide. Snorkelers who walk across risk being stranded when the tide rises.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

Strong outgoing tide can create a moderate current through the cove's entrance between the island and shore, particularly noticeable during spring tides.

  • Low risk: Wind chop

Southern ocean winds whipping across Spencer Gulf can stir up choppy conditions in the cove within minutes, reducing visibility and making entry/exiting difficult.

  • Low risk: Wind chop (summer)

Southern ocean winds whipping across Spencer Gulf can stir up choppy conditions in the cove within minutes, reducing visibility and making entry/exiting difficult.

  • Low risk: Great white shark presence

Great white sharks are known to visit these waters. Snorkelers should be aware and exercise caution, especially farther from shore.

  • Low risk: Old jetty piles / submerged debris

Remnants of the 1882 wooden jetty remain in the water as submerged piles and debris, posing a hazard to snorkelers unaware of their location.
