Lighthouse Reef lies within the wild, wave-pounded basalt coastline of Cape Bridgewater, the southern gateway to Discovery Bay Marine National Park. This cold-water snorkel spot sits where the Southern Ocean meets Victoria's largest coastal basalt formation, creating a dramatic seascape of intertidal reefs, gutters, and submerged rock platforms. The nutrient-rich Bonney Upwelling fuels spectacular sponge gardens, kelp forests, and dense growths of sessile invertebrates. Snorkellers can explore the shallow near-shore basalt reefs in the lee of the cape, where the clear Southern Ocean water offers a window into a thriving temperate ecosystem. It's a remote, wild spot — the true marine edge of western Victoria.

High risk: Large unexpected waves
Rogue or sneaker waves can surge onto rock platforms without warning, particularly during winter swells.
Moderate risk: Strong currents and undertows
This coast experiences one of the highest wave energy environments in Victoria. Powerful swells from the Southern Ocean create strong surging currents and undertows, especially around the reef.
Moderate risk: Changing tides
Some points along the park are not passable at high tide. Snorkellers must be aware of tidal windows to avoid being cut off or swept out.
Low risk: Cold water temperature
Southern Ocean waters are cold year-round, with temperatures rarely exceeding 15°C, increasing the risk of hypothermia without proper exposure protection.
