Lamont Reef is a standout snorkeling and dive destination in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, prized for its incredible variety of terrain packed into a single reef system. The northern side offers sheltered, calm snorkel zones with shallow coral gardens and large bommies reaching only 20 metres, while the southern side plunges into dramatic drop-offs, walls, caves, and ledges exceeding 40 metres. The western side features gradual reef slopes and exposed shoals with pristine coral. Its unique orientation provides protection from both southerly and northerly swells, making it an excellent alternative when other reefs are rough. Snorkelers can expect clear waters, vibrant hard coral formations, giant clams, and abundant reef fish in its protected shallows.

Moderate risk: Ocean currents
Strong currents can sweep through the deeper southern sections of the reef, particularly around walls, caves, and ledges. These are more relevant to divers but can affect snorkelers near the drop-off.
Low risk: Deep drop-offs
The southern side of the reef features dramatic drop-offs exceeding 40 metres, which can be hazardous for inexperienced snorkelers who drift beyond the shallow zones.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic from charter vessels and private boats accessing the reef from 1770 Marina and other launch points.
