Lakes Entrance is the gateway between the Gippsland Lakes and the Bass Strait, where a man-made entrance channel and its surrounding rocky breakwaters and artificial reefs create an accessible snorkeling zone. The offshore piers and submerged reef structures along the channel edges offer clear, sheltered conditions on calm days, with seagrass beds, sandy patches, and rocky habitat attracting a surprising diversity of temperate marine life. This is one of the few places in Victoria where you can snorkel in a working coastal channel system, with the added appeal of the nearby ocean beach.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Strong tidal currents

The narrow entrance channel between the lakes and ocean experiences strong tidal flows, especially during outgoing tides, which can sweep snorkelers offshore.

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic

The entrance channel is used by fishing and recreational vessels; snorkelers must stay clear of boat lanes and be aware of vessel movements at all times.

  • Low risk: Variable water clarity

After rain or wind, sediment from the lakes reduces visibility significantly; best conditions occur on calm, incoming tides with low swell.
