Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is a stunning perched freshwater lake set on K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island. Its crystal-clear, silica-white waters and pure white sandy beach create an otherworldly snorkeling setting. Unlike ocean snorkeling, Lake McKenzie offers calm, shallow conditions ideal for beginner snorkelers. The lake sits 100 metres above sea level, sustained entirely by rainwater, giving it a bathtub-like clarity. Snorkeling here reveals an eerie, almost desert-like underwater landscape of pure white sandbars with scattered aquatic plants and small freshwater fish — a uniquely gentle and magical freshwater experience.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Dingoes (Wongari)

K'gari is home to a population of dingoes. Never feed them and keep a safe distance. Store food securely and supervise children at all times.

  • Moderate risk: Limited Cell Reception

Remote location with no mobile phone reception on K'gari; self-reliance required

  • Low risk: Sun exposure

The open white silica sand reflects sunlight intensely, increasing UV exposure and risk of sunburn. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and protective clothing.

  • Low risk: Remote location

Lake McKenzie is located deep within K'gari (Fraser Island) with limited mobile reception and no immediate emergency services. Carry sufficient water, food, and a first-aid kit.

  • Low risk: Soft Sandy Exit

The lake has a soft, sandy bottom with a gradual drop-off; no lifeguards on duty

  • Low risk: Dingo Presence

K'gari is home to wongari (dingoes); never feed or approach dingoes near the lake shore
