Lake Esmond is a former clay quarry turned freshwater swimming and snorkeling lake, nestled in parkland 3 km south-east of Ballarat's city centre. Originally excavated for the Eureka Tile Works (closed 1982), the lake now fills with deep, cold, untreated water and offers a sheltered triangular swim course used by the Ballarat Triathlon Club. Reedy margins give way to clear water away from shore, though the clay bottom clouds easily with any disturbance. Surrounded by an adventure playground, BBQs, walking trails, and a small jetty, it's a popular local escape for a quick dip, paddle, or snorkel.

Moderate risk: Deep cold untreated water
Lake depth exceeds 2 m and the water remains cold year-round; untreated natural water may contain bacteria.
Low risk: Stormwater runoff after rain
Small urban stormwater drains enter the lake on the southern side; avoid swimming for 48 hours after heavy rainfall due to potential poorer water quality.
Low risk: Poor visibility near shore
Clay bottom stirs up easily, reducing underwater visibility to near zero when disturbed — hazardous for snorkelers unfamiliar with the bottom.
Low risk: Submerged vegetation and reeds
Reeds line much of the shoreline; entry is restricted to cleared gaps. Unseen reeds and silt can entangle swimmers.
Low risk: Slippery clay bottom
The clay lakebed becomes very slippery and stirs up sediment, reducing visibility near the shore on entry.
Low risk: Reeds restricting entry
Thick reeds line much of the shore; entry is limited to a few cleared gaps, mainly at the eastern end.
