Lake Bullen Merri is a spectacular volcanic maar crater lake near Camperdown in Victoria's Western District. Formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, this brackish-water lake reaches depths of 66 metres with shallow nearshore shelves dropping abruptly into deep, green-tinted waters. Its sheltered setting offers unique inland snorkelling away from ocean swell, with submerged volcanic walls and fascinating geology to explore. The lake is also popular with freedivers and technical divers seeking deep training dives accessible directly from the shore.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Fishing line entanglement

Fishing line can be left in the water near shore entry points, posing entanglement risk to snorkellers.

  • Moderate risk: Rapid depth drop-off

Shallow areas of 3-7m drop away steeply to depths of 50m+, requiring careful depth awareness.

  • Low risk: Poor visibility in summer

Visibility is typically poor in summer months (December to February); best visibility is from March to October.

  • Low risk: Dark conditions at depth

The water is naturally green and visibility diminishes quickly at depth; a dive light is recommended.

  • Low risk: Slippery shore entry/exit

Entry and exit points can be slippery; care needed when entering or leaving the water from the shoreline.
