The La Bella is a historic iron-hulled steamship wreck resting in Lady Bay, off Warrnambool on Victoria's notorious Shipwreck Coast. Sunk in 1853 after striking a reef, the wreck now lies in approximately 6–12 metres of water about 250 metres off the Warrnambool breakwater. The site is rich in marine growth, encrusted with colourful sponges and kelp, and attracts abundant fish life including bream, wrasse, and the occasional crayfish sheltering in the twisted wreckage. Its shallow depth and proximity to shore make it one of the most accessible wreck snorkels in Victoria, though conditions are best in calm weather.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong ocean swells

Exposed to Southern Ocean swells; conditions can deteriorate quickly. Only safe in calm seas.

  • Moderate risk: Cold water temperature

Water temperatures range from 10–16°C year-round; cold shock and hypothermia risk without proper exposure protection.

  • Low risk: Strong currents

Tidal flows around the breakwater and Lady Bay can create unpredictable currents, especially on outgoing tide.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Located near Warrnambool harbour and breakwater; vessels transit the area regularly. Maintain situational awareness.

  • Low risk: Sharp wreck metal

Exposed iron plates and broken superstructure can cause cuts; avoid touching wreckage.
