Beneath the towering 800-metre grain jetty in Kwinana, a submerged metropolis of soft corals, sponges, and seafans clings to every pylon, creating an artificial reef teeming with life. The dark, ghostlike pylons attract Port Jackson sharks, boxfish, leatherjackets, and massive schools of baitfish. Crystal-clear visibility is common on calm days, and the dappled light filtering through the jetty structure makes for dramatic underwater scenery. A true Perth shore-dive favourite that feels a world away from the industrial port above the surface.

Moderate risk: Boat traffic
The grain terminal is an active commercial facility with ship movements; snorkellers must stay clear of vessel channels.
Moderate risk: Parallel shore current
A strong current can run parallel to the shore, making navigation tricky when combined with the magnetic interference from the jetty structure.
Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal flows can develop around the jetty pylons, especially during spring tides, making it difficult to maintain position.
Low risk: Fishing activity
The jetty is an active industrial grain terminal used by fishing vessels; watch for fishing lines, hooks, and boat traffic around the jetty.
Low risk: Reduced visibility
Milky or stirred-up sediment can significantly reduce underwater visibility, especially when sea breezes pick up in the afternoon.
Low risk: Barnacle-encrusted pylons
The jetty's wooden and concrete pylons are covered in sharp barnacles and marine growth that can cause cuts and abrasions.
Low risk: Compass interference from jetty
The long jetty interferes with compass readings, requiring careful navigation.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Visibility can be reduced, especially after weather events; reported as low as 4 m.
Low risk: Long surface swim
A long surface swim (~200 m) from shore to the jetty is required, which can be tiring in current or swell.

Getting in
Located about 45 minutes south of Perth CBD. Take Rockingham Road in Kwinana; the entrance to the carpark is slightly hidden by tall grass and reeds. Park and follow the sandy path down to the beach, then walk out along the jetty pylons to enter.
Good-sized carpark at the end of the access road; entrance can be easy to miss among the tall grass and reeds.
