Just off the southern headland of Botany Bay, The Monument — named for Captain Cook's first landing site — is a shallow, sheltered shore-entry snorkel that rewards slow exploration. A gentle slope of sponge gardens, Neptune's necklace seaweed, and rocky crevices hides colour galore: from biscuit seastars and nudibranchs to blue branching algae. Peek around boulders for octopus, wrasse, and the occasional resting stingray. The north-west-facing drift along the beach makes for an easy, current-assisted swim back, and the clear, sunlit shallows (1–7 m) are perfect for beginners wanting a mellow, critter-filled session.

Low risk: Outgoing tide current
A moderate drift current flows north-west along the beach, especially on the outgoing tide. Stronger near the pier
Low risk: Rocky entry
Entry is via small sand patches between rocks. Uneven footing and slippery rocks require care
Low risk: Boat traffic near pier
The pier and adjoining channel can have boat traffic. Stay clear of the vessel channel
Low risk: Drift current along beach
The site faces north-west and creates a gentle drift along the beach side. Snorkelers should be aware of drifting away from their entry point.
Low risk: Kelp entanglement
Thick kelp beds and crevices can snag fins or mask straps; snorkelers need to stay aware and avoid getting tangled.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Located inside Botany Bay entrance, occasional boat traffic may pass near the inshore zone.
