Knuckle Reef is a pristine outer reef destination in the Whitsunday group of the Great Barrier Reef, offering superb snorkelling with fewer crowds than neighbouring Hardy Reef. This platform-accessible reef system features impressive coral bommies, expansive plate corals, and vibrant marine gardens in crystal-clear oceanic waters. The reef's position on the outer continental shelf delivers excellent water clarity, making it ideal for spotting colourful reef fish, rays, and turtles. Day tours from Airlie Beach bring snorkellers to a floating pontoon or mooring, where they can spend hours exploring the coral gardens that surround this less-visited gem of the southern Great Barrier Reef.

Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current
Strong currents can sweep across the outer reef, particularly on falling tides. Snorkellers should stay within the marked pontoon area or follow guide instructions.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Sharp coral formations are present throughout the reef. Touching or standing on coral is prohibited and dangerous.
Low risk: Wind chop and swell
The outer reef platform can be subject to strong winds and choppy conditions, particularly in winter, affecting snorkel conditions.
Low risk: Marine stingers
Marine stingers including fire coral and stonefish are present on the reef. Wearing a stinger suit (provided by most operators) is recommended.
